About This Course:
EEAC's Basic EEO & Affirmative Action Compliance seminar is a three-day course designed to provide human resources generalists, EEO/AA specialists, and in-house attorneys who are relatively new to the field with a practical understanding of the fundamental principles and requirements of the federal equal employment opportunity laws, including an overview of the affirmative action requirements that apply to federal contractors.

Federal laws covered during the first two days of the course include Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Equal Pay Act (EPA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), veterans employment and nondiscrimination requirements, as well as immigration-related employment eligibility verification requirements. Participants also briefly review the EEOC charge handling process.

The third day covers the basic requirements of affirmative action compliance, including an explanation of the components of an affirmative action program (AAP) and the process used by the U.S. Labor Department's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) to audit compliance.

EEAC's experienced facilitators present these laws in the context of interactive discussion exercises that raise everyday compliance issues, including allegations of prohibited discrimination in terms and conditions of employment, unlawful harassment and retaliation, and failure to provide reasonable accommodation.

Topics covered during the course include:
  • Sources of Rules Governing Workplace Behavior
  • Theories of Discrimination
  • McDonnell-Douglas Burden Shifting Scheme
  • Federal Employment Laws
  • Establishing Non-Discriminatory Employment Practices
  • Overview of EEOC Charge Processing Procedures
  • Relationship Between EEO and Affirmative Action
  • AAP Annual Statistical Reports and Narrative Requirements
  • Compliance Enforcement
