Today, one in twenty Americans is openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, and one in ten Americans has engaged in LGBT lifestyle choices at some point in his or her life.
And thanks to the EEOC, the new ENDA laws, FMLA's childcare provisions, and the Supreme Court holding on marriage, LGBT workers now have protection from discrimination, a voice in the law, and a new social presence in our society.
As such, employers today must understand the culture, the law, and the expectations of employees as to gender and sexual fluidity.
Understanding both legal compliance and best practices in LGBT employment is essential today. From name changes to bathroom breaks to holiday parties, LGBT issues have to be understood and handled appropriately.
