More and more employers have been turning to mandatory furloughs – requiring employees to take time off without pay, to cut costs in this challenging economy. Is this something you should consider?
Furloughs allow you to cut costs while still maintaining your roster of talent. When things start looking brighter, you can just invite your stars to come back to work. But there are some complex wage/hour implications to consider. You won’t save any money (or employee goodwill) if you botch the process, destroy your employees’ exempt status, and owe a bunch of overtime and back pay.
Join us for an in-depth audio conference all about how and when you can utilize furloughs to the benefit of both your business and your employees – while staying on the right side of the law.
Learning Objectives:- Whether furloughs could be a good idea for your business – and how to decide if you should take the plunge
- How furloughs work in practice, for both exempt and non-exempt employees
- The best way to present a furlough program to your employees
- The implications for vacation time/PTO, 401(k) plans, and overtime you need to consider
- What you need to know about the FLSA’s salary basis rules for exempt employees
- The pros and cons of mandatory vs. voluntary furloughs
About Your Speaker:
Lawrence McGoldrick, Esq. is of counsel in the Atlanta office of Fisher & Phillips, LLP. Representing and advising management since 1983, McGoldrick has practiced in virtually all areas of labor and employment law. He has successfully litigated cases at the trial and appellate levels, and he now concentrates his practice in the areas of government investigations, legal compliance audits, and counseling employers on how to handle or prevent problems in the workplace.
McGoldrick has special expertise in the areas of wage and hour law, employee compensation plans, laws regulating background investigations of applicants and employees, and laws addressing employer obligations toward ill, injured, or disabled employees. He has conducted audits for national, regional, and local employers to improve their compliance with wage and hour laws, especially compliance with exempt/nonexempt employee classification requirements and other hotly litigated wage-hour issues.
McGoldrick has also worked on behalf of clients and persuaded U.S. Department of Labor officials in Washington to issue formal opinion letter rulings in favor of certain wage-hour practices of the clients, thus providing the clients a statutory defense against future litigation over those practices.

| About Webcasts / Audio Conferences / Podcasts: |
Webcasts, audio conferences, and podcasts are presentations that you attend via the Internet, phone, or mobile device at a specified date and time for "live" versions, or at your convenience for "recorded" and "On-Demand" versions.
The live versions are interactive, meaning that participants can ask questions in real time, plus are a very cost-effective form a training because 1) you receive fast, convenient learning without any out-of-office time; 2) you can invite as many colleagues as you'd like to listen in on a single phone line; 3) you incur no travel expenses; and 4) you and your colleagues are back at work immediately after the session ends!
And though with recorded versions you do lose the ability to ask questions, you gain the ability to hear the presentation numerous times and to share it with others in your office.
Handout materials and the phone number for live presentations are made available to you prior to the event via email from the presenter and from the "MyAccount" link on the menu bar. Copies of the presentations are included with recorded versions. |
