Transitioning Job Grades To Meet Higher Exemption Thresholds Under The New Overtime Rule: Answering The When, How And If

Description:

You’ve only got until December 1 to get in compliance with the Department of Labor’s final overtime exemption rule, which will raise the salary threshold from $23,660 to $47,476.

Aside from having to reclassify an estimated 4 million workers collectively, U.S.-based employers have the added headache of figuring out how the switch to overtime-eligible status for many of their employees will impact their families of job grades.

This leads to many important questions, such as:

  • Will you bump up the salary level for exempt job grades that no longer meet the threshold test? If so, will those jobs still be competitive for the market? What if this creates salary compression?

  • Will you eliminate the lower grades from your exempt job grade family? And if so, where will the jobs currently in that job grade family be placed in your new job grade structure?

  • If your exempt and nonexempt job grade families already overlap, will you just move the previously exempt positions to the other job grade family? What will you do if your job grade families don't already overlap?

  • If you move currently exempt jobs to a lower job grade, how will you communicate being downgraded to the incumbents in those jobs?
Join us for the answers to these questions and more when John Rubino, a skilled compensation consultant, will give you practical insights on how to transition your job grade families to meet the new overtime regulation's higher exemption threshold.

Learning Objectives:
  • What to consider before deciding whether to increase the salary level for exempt job grades that no longer meet the federal salary threshold test and how to tackle salary compression if needed
  • How to manage concerns over the competitiveness of compensation raised to exceed the new salary threshold
  • How to manage the task of placing jobs of a certain grade family into your job grade structure, in the case of a lower grade being eliminated from an exempt grade family
  • What, if anything, to do about overlapping exempt and non-exempt job grade families
  • Communication strategies for discussing perceived “downgraded” job grades with affected employees

About Webcasts / Audio Conferences / Podcasts:

Webcasts, audio conferences, and podcasts are presentations that you attend via the Internet, phone, or mobile device at a specified date and time for "live" versions, or at your convenience for "recorded" and "On-Demand" versions.

The live versions are interactive, meaning that participants can ask questions in real time, plus are a very cost-effective form of training because 1) you receive fast, convenient learning without any out-of-office time; 2) you can invite as many colleagues as you'd like to listen in on a single phone line; 3) you incur no travel expenses; and 4) you and your colleagues are back at work immediately after the session ends!

And though with recorded versions you do lose the ability to ask questions, you gain the ability to hear the presentation numerous times and to share it with others in your office.

Handout materials and the phone number for live presentations are made available to you prior to the event via email from the presenter and from the "MyAccount" link on the menu bar. Copies of the presentations are included with recorded versions.
