If properly designed with well-selected tools, standing workstations may provide an ergonomically beneficial alternative to traditional sitting workstations. That’s why many companies have started taking a close look at them. But what they are discovering is that not all standing workstations are considered equal.
Taking time on the front end to evaluate a task, talking with employers and supervisors in order to gather useful design criteria information, and working closely with either an ergonomics specialist or a station manufacturer will help to ensure that the solution is more effective and that you achieve maximum ROI.
For example, addressing factors like height, surface, lighting, and configuration adequately could be the difference between a standing station that is well received by employees, safe, and has a positive impact on productivity.

- Consider the benefits and drawbacks of standing work stations
- Determine the health benefits of standing work stations relative to obesity, metabolic syndromes, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol
- Identify jobs and tasks in your organization that may be good candidates for standing work stations
- Explain to both senior management and employees why standing work stations may have a legitimate place in your organization
- Respond to the typical resistance to introducing standing work stations
- Design standing work stations in the most ergonomically effective manner addressing key factors including posture, desk position, monitor and/or tool location, communication equipment placement, key object location, lighting, and standing surfaces
- Select standing work stations that will work best for your specific activities
- Determine the best tool selection from an ergonomic perspective for your workstations
Kevin Slates, Ed.,D., MPA, BS, CSP
Clinical Associate Professor
Kevin Slates, Ed.,D., MPA, BS, CSP is a Clinical Associate Professor in the department of Applied Health Science at Indiana University. Dr. Slates is also the Safety Program Coordinator at the university and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses safety, industrial hygiene and environmental health. His research interests include program evaluation, EHS management systems, safety culture, health disparities and exposure assessment. his experience includes working for the Kentucky Occupational Safety Health Program and the Environmental Public Protection Cabinet as a manager, consultant and inspector. His dissertation examined safety performance metrics and government VPP partnership programs.
Dr. Slates holds a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University, a M.P.A, in Public Administration from Kentucky State University and Doctorate in Education from Spalding University. He is a Certified Safety Professional and authorized OSHA outreach general industry and construction trainer. He is also an active member of AIHA and ASSE.
