Description:

An employee loses a close relative in a terrible accident. A spouse dies after a long battle with cancer. A worker goes through a heart-wrenching divorce.

HR can help its company’s workers cope with painful, life-changing losses like these, but it also must walk a fine line.

On the one hand, you want to show your compassion and sensitivity. But you also must ensure professionalism, productivity, and consistency with the law and company policy. Leave laws such as the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) can come into play, as well as company bereavement policies. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may also be triggered.

Join us for an in-depth webinar on how to address personal and legal issues that can surface when an employee encounters a significant loss. Our speakers, Attorney KrisAnn Norby-Jahner of Vogel Law Firm and Alison W. Magee, LICSW of KGA, will provide much-needed guidance on how to support employees who have suffered a loss with compassion and professionalism, while avoiding legal missteps.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Ensure your managers can provide grieving employees with understanding and compassion when they are facing difficult situations
  • Craft or update a bereavement policy addressing situations of loss among workers
  • Provide clear parameters on how much time off is allowed, and under what circumstances
  • Define the policy to identify what types of loss will be considered—close relatives, in-laws, etc.
  • Be sensitive to individual employee needs and confidentiality concerns
  • Provide training for managers and HR to understand how to handle situations where an employee encounters tragic loss
  • Avoid triggering legal issues that might arise
  • And much more!
BONUS: In addition to receiving a comprehensive slide deck, you’ll also receive KGA handouts on how to handle when a grieving coworker returns to work, support you can provide to a grieving person, what to do if an employee dies, and how to manage stress by building resilience.

About Webcasts / Audio Conferences / Podcasts:

Webcasts, audio conferences, and podcasts are presentations that you attend via the Internet, phone, or mobile device at a specified date and time for "live" versions, or at your convenience for "recorded" and "On-Demand" versions.

The live versions are interactive, meaning that participants can ask questions in real time, plus are a very cost-effective form of training because 1) you receive fast, convenient learning without any out-of-office time; 2) you can invite as many colleagues as you'd like to listen in on a single phone line; 3) you incur no travel expenses; and 4) you and your colleagues are back at work immediately after the session ends!

And though with recorded versions you do lose the ability to ask questions, you gain the ability to hear the presentation numerous times and to share it with others in your office.

Handout materials and the phone number for live presentations are made available to you prior to the event via email from the presenter and from the "MyAccount" link on the menu bar. Copies of the presentations are included with recorded versions.
