Violence is an all too common risk in the American workplace. Many businesses fail to understand that hostile grievances or statements made in anger are not necessarily a prelude to violence and that an aggressive response is not always the best one.

Instead, the employer should carefully evaluate the nature of the risk and thoughtfully determine the best strategy for reducing the likelihood of harm. That process also means trying to understand the motives and circumstances of those who come to attention, the wide variety of scenarios employers may encounter, and how to identify those individuals who actually could pose a risk.

  • His extensive work in organizational trauma reduction led to his specializing, since 1989, in the assessment and management of workplace violence risk
  • Has consulted throughout the United States on over 4,000 threat cases for numerous Fortune 500 companies, private and public organizations, law firms and their clients, colleges and universities, and law enforcement and governmental agencies
  • Has designed and provided detailed employer and campus threat management team training for responding to a wide range of potential risk scenarios
  • Has testified before the California State Legislature on behalf of workplace violence prevention legislation, and has written or co-wrote peer-reviewed publications in the areas of stalking, workplace mass murder, violence risk assessment, and workplace trauma management
  • In collaboration with Dr. Reid Meloy, he developed and published in 2007 The WAVR-21, the first scientifically based structured professional guide for assessing workplace violence risk
