You’ve only got until December 1 to get in compliance with the Department of Labor’s final overtime exemption rule, which will raise the salary threshold from $23,660 to $47,476.

Aside from having to reclassify an estimated 4 million workers collectively, U.S.-based employers have the added headache of figuring out how the switch to overtime-eligible status for many of their employees will impact their families of job grades.

This leads to many important questions, such as:
  • Will you bump up the salary level for exempt job grades that no longer meet the threshold test? If so, will those jobs still be competitive for the market? What if this creates salary compression?

  • Will you eliminate the lower grades from your exempt job grade family? And if so, where will the jobs currently in that job grade family be placed in your new job grade structure?
