About This Course:
Is your organization’s website fully accessible to disabled individuals? If it’s not, you could be subjected to costly legal scrutiny, as the Department of Justice is taking increased notice on this issue, and the U.S. Access Board soon will release new website accessibility standards.

Some federal circuit courts of appeal have already ruled that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to e-commerce and websites offering goods and services unconnected to a physical place. This raises the issue of what businesses should do to ensure that their websites, as places of public accommodation, are ADA accessible.

Website accessibility is especially important for the job application process. The ADA requires employers to ensure that job applicants and employees with disabilities can fully participate in the workplace, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has interpreted this requirement to include computer and website accessibility.

About Your Presenters

Joseph A. Martini
Director of Assistive Technology
Perkins School for the Blind

Joseph Martini is the Director of Assistive Technology at Perkins Solutions. In this role he is responsible for designing and managing programs for Perkins Access, the professional services arm of Perkins Solutions. Perkins Access provides digital accessibility and usability assessments, remediation and sustainability programs, individual and group training/education services, workplace accessibility audits and product testing programs. Perkins Access clients include Harvard University, University of North Carolina, USDA, and Ernst & Young. Mr. Martini manages the Assistive Technology Lab at Perkins as well as oversees a staff of Technology Specialists with expertise in solutions for individuals with visual impairments, deaf blindness and multiple disabilities. Mr. Martini has an extensive background in healthcare services, primarily rehabilitation and post-acute services as well as senior housing and services. He has held senior business development positions at Brickstone Senior Living, Hebrew SeniorLife, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, and The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Jonathan Mook, Esq.
DiMuro Ginsburg

Jonathan R. Mook is a founding partner in the firm of DiMuroGinsberg. Mr. Mook is a nationally recognized authority on the Americans with Disabilities Act and is the author of two treatises published by Lexis Nexis, Americans with Disabilities Act: Employee Rights and Employer Obligations and Americans with Disabilities Act: Public Accommodations and Commercial Facilities. He lectures nationally on the Americans with Disabilities Act and other employment law topics. In January 2015, he was named to the Alexandria Commission on Persons with Disabilities. Mr. Mook is the editor of the Virginia Employment Law Letter and a member of the Editorial Board of Bender's Labor and Employment Bulletin.

Marla Runyan
Lead Assistive Technology Support, Training, and Testing Specialist
Perkins School for the Blind

Marla Runyan joined Perkins in 2013. She is a licensed Teacher of the Visually Impaired and a licensed Teacher of the Deaf with more than 20 years of experience supporting students with unique needs in the K-12 educational setting. She is an experienced user of assistive technology on Mac, iOS and Windows platforms, including Zoom, VoiceOver, ZoomText, JAWS and MAGic. She is also an expert on all matters related to Accessibility Principles for ICT and issues of usability of digital properties. Additionally, she has extensive knowledge of iOS accessibility features and apps that support independent living, literacy, academic instruction and augmentative communication. A former world-class athlete, Ms. Runyan was the first legally blind U.S. Olympian in track and field, and competed at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
