About This Course:
Zika continues to be a big concern for employers and workers traveling outside and into the United States. And, federal agencies continue to take the threat of a Zika outbreak very seriously.

For instance:
  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are monitoring the Zika virus outbreak spreading through Central and South America, Mexico, and now, in Florida. They have noted that workers exposed to mosquitoes or the blood or bodily fluids of infected people may be at risk for occupationally acquired Zika infection.

  • In April, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) held a Zika Action Plan Summit to provide local officials information and tools to improve preparedness and response to mosquito-borne transmission of the Zika virus in the United States. The CDC also explained that the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico have experienced active Zika transmission, and in one case, an individual in Puerto Rice died after becoming infected with the virus.
Zika, a predominantly mosquito-borne and potentially sexually transmitted virus that can result in a condition called microcephaly in unborn children, was thrust into the spotlight earlier this year when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global health emergency. Also, earlier this year, WHO and the CDC formulated travel advisories to help minimize the spread of the virus.

Now is the time of year that mosquito populations explode, and employees are likely to have questions about how the virus is transmitted and what to do about pending business travel. Furthermore, pregnant employees may be particularly concerned and requesting work-from-home arrangements to minimize their risk of contracting Zika.

Ms. Ellington has also written numerous publications on workplace safety and health, including OSHA’s most frequently violated standards; hazard communication and GHS; personal protective equipment; and effective workplace training. In addition, Ms. Ellington, who is bilingual, manages the development of all Spanish-language materials at BLR, ensuring translation accuracy and consistency. She received her bachelor of arts in English and Spanish philology (linguistics) from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the American Translators Association.

Catherine Gray, JD
Senior Managing Editor

Catherine Moreton Gray, JD, is Senior Managing Editor for Human Resources and Compensation. Ms. Gray has over 20 years combined experience in HR management and as a management-side labor and employment attorney. Her HR experience includes recruiting, employee relations and communications, affirmative action and compensation. As an attorney, Ms. Gray regularly counseled employers on issues such as complying with federal and state wage and hour laws, accommodating employees with disabilities, complying with federal and state laws requiring paid sick leave and family and medical leave, and union avoidance and labor relations.

Ms. Gray represented employers in government audits, before administrative agencies, and in federal and state courts on matters including discrimination, wrongful discharge, sexual harassment, affirmative action compliance, unfair labor practices and wage and hour violations.

Ms. Gray has also written articles on developing employment law issues, and developed and presented training for clients. Ms. Gray received her law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law, and is admitted to practice law in the State of Connecticut and before the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut.
