HR Training Center Guide
One leave request can fall under four laws at once. An injured employee may be on workers' compensation, entitled to FMLA leave, owed an accommodation under the ADA, and covered by a state law as well. This guide brings together everything on HRTrainingCenter.com about managing leave and accommodation as one process.
The first section explains the laws and how they overlap. The second covers the day-to-day work of intake, tracking, documentation and return to work. The third helps you choose training. Two companion guides go deeper on single laws: the FMLA Guide and the ADA and Accommodation Guide.

It is the process an employer uses to receive leave and accommodation requests, decide which laws apply, communicate with the employee, track time, continue benefits and return the employee to work. Our employer guide to leave management explains each step.
Often more than one. The FMLA, the ADA, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, workers' compensation and state leave laws can all apply to the same absence, and the employee generally receives the benefit of each law that covers them. Our articles on overlapping leave laws show how to work through it.
The PWFA covers employers with 15 or more employees and requires reasonable accommodation of known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions unless it would cause undue hardship. Our employer guide to the PWFA covers the details and the current status of the regulation.
Several organizations offer leave management credentials and certificates. Our comparison article describes the main options and what each one signifies.
