- Accepted Claim
A workers' comp claim that the insurance carrier agrees is work-related and eligible for benefits
- Adjusted Gross Weekly Wage (AWW)
The average amount an employee earns per week, used to calculate benefit payments
- Appeal
A formal request to review or challenge a decision made about a workers' comp claim
- Authorized Treating Physician (ATP)
The doctor approved by the insurer or employer to provide medical treatment for the injured worker
- Benefit Period
The length of time during which workers' comp benefits are payable
- Compensable Injury
An injury or illness that is determined to be work-related and covered under workers' compensation
- Claimant
The injured employee who files a workers' compensation claim
- Claims Adjuster
The insurance representative who investigates and manages the workers' comp claim
- Disability Benefits
Payments made to an injured worker who cannot work or has limited ability to work due to a job-related injury
- Employer's First Report of Injury (FROI)
The official form an employer submits to report a workplace injury
- Independent Medical Examination (IME)
An evaluation by a doctor not involved in the worker's treatment, often requested by the insurer
- Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI)
The point at which an injured worker's condition has stabilized and is unlikely to improve further with treatment
- Medical Benefits
Coverage for reasonable and necessary medical treatment related to the work injury
- Permanent Partial Disability (PPD)
A lasting impairment that partially limits a worker's ability to perform job duties
- Permanent Total Disability (PTD)
A permanent injury that prevents the worker from performing any type of gainful employment
- Temporary Partial Disability (TPD)
Benefits paid when a worker can return to limited or lower-paying work during recovery
- Temporary Total Disability (TTD)
Benefits paid when a worker is completely unable to work for a temporary period
- Utilization Review
A process used by insurers to evaluate whether medical treatment is necessary and appropriate
- Wage Replacement Benefits
Payments that replace a portion of lost wages due to a work-related injury or illness
