Valid Reasons For FMLA Intermittent Leave
3/5/2026
Intermittent leave can be taken for any
FMLA-qualifying reason, but some types require employer approval. For instance:
- Employee's own serious health condition

- To care for a spouse, child, or parent with serious condition
- Birth and bonding with a newborn. This often overlaps with requirements under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.
- Adoption/foster placement and bonding
- Military caregiver leave (up to 26 weeks)
- Qualifying exigency for military family member
Managing these leaves correctly is a core competency for any
HR Generalist to ensure
human resources compliance.
